We're glad you're here! ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥'s Department of Theatre and Dance has a strong emphasis on diverse storytelling, collaborative creation, and inclusive performance practices.
Rooted in student-driven programming, our productions and curriculum empower emerging artists to explore bold ideas and amplify underrepresented voices. We offer a Bachelor of Arts with a concentrated track in Theatre Performance or Design and Technology.
“Theatre is for everyone.â€
Our department motto drives everything we do in the classroom and on the stage. The plays we produce tell stories that reflect the interests, passions and concerns of both our student body and our community. Our classes use theatre as a lens through which we explore the world. We have an emphasis on exploring the work of playwrights of color, queer artists, and international theatre creators. Our curriculum and offerings allow students to discover who they are as artists and scholars and how theatre fits into their professional aspirations.
“Act early, act often.â€
The Department of Theatre and Dance prides itself on casting diverse pools of talent from all undergraduate years and across a wide range of majors. All production opportunities (acting on stage, designing, stage management, and work study) are available to any student on campus. There is no preference given to majors over non-majors or seniors over first-year students.
“Create connections. Make opportunities.â€
The department supports student learning by connecting students with professional theatre and professional artists. Our guest artist program brings two national theatre artists to campus each year to direct mainstage plays, allowing students to work with successful professionals. Recent guest artists have come from New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, St. Louis and Seattle. Additional theatre professionals visit with students regularly through seminar courses, with guests meeting virtually to offer expertise.
Our students also take the reins in theatre-making. Besides classes in devising, directing, and set design, students have the opportunity to direct and produce plays in the entirely student-run Lab Series. From musicals to modern interpretations of classics to cutting-edge contemporary pieces, anything is possible!
